The Carer Needs Support

I look over at my husband and all I see is a man with the complete weight of the world on his shoulders. You see our family is not your typical family we are very special. 3 out of the 4 children have autism and varying complex needs. I wont go into it but it makes life very challenging at times. Myself I have had several strokes now been diagnosed with a CHD – Congenital heart defect which makes life very interesting.

My husband takes on the role of head of the house as I help out as much as I can but the more demanding jobs of housework and cooking is left to my husband. I was talking to him and he said he was exhausted running from A to B to C. I suddenly realised despite him being a carer he gets no support. Family have turned their back on us just when we needed them the most.

We are not lucky enough to have a social worker as we got signed off as soon as they heard I had my first stroke to me this makes the support system a joke.

Sometimes I know my husband would like to have someone ask him how he is how he is feeling. Being a carer can be one of the loneliest jobs in the world. Its not a job any of us would really want to do if we had a choice but sometimes we are pushed into it. Circumstances dictate we become a carer of our child/spouse etc. A carer is on call 24 hours a week 7 days a week. A carer doesnt have the luxury of a holiday. People like my husband need support someone to talk to.

So if you know someone that is a carer just go and say hello just that one interaction could make their day. It shows people like my husband that they are not alone. Please show some support to the carers that do a tremendous job with very little or no thanks at times.

  1. Your husband deserves to have support I cant believe he gets none that isnt right. I know how challenging autism is he deserves a medal. I wish you and your family all the best and I hope your husband gets the help he deserves soon.
