It’s amazing how many people know someone with Autism or on the ASD spectrum. Yet despite this , there is still lots of ignorance surrounding autism. For a start if you hear or see the word autism don’t go and run screaming to the hills or immediately dismiss the post, article. At the end of the day autism is just a word, there is a real person behind that word. If you took a few minutes to get to know them you would see how awesome they actually are.
Talking from a personal point of view I have 3 children with autism and time and time again I have seen ignorance at it’s best. I have had people shout at me, telling me to shut the kids up from screaming. I have been called a bad mother because of the kids behaviour. I have been totally ignored. My family have been given dirty, filthy looks by complete strangers. I have been called names ,some of them so demeaning and upsetting.
These people fail to realise that autism is not caused by bad parenting, or neglect. Autism is in fact the brain being wired differently to everyone else. Now unless I am some miracle worker I don’t actually think autism was caused by my parenting skills !!. Another thing, if people do know how to stop an autistic child screaming and in turn stop a meltdown I would love to know. It would save a lot of heartache at times.
My children endure so much ignorance as it is. The upsetting thing is that for the rest of their lives they will have people look, stare and comment on their behaviour. Autism cannot be cured by a tablet. They won’t grow out of it. Things may become slightly easier as we have tactics and strategies in place.
Next time you see a blog post, article about autism. Take a few minutes to read it, you might find it interesting. My children are full of quirky ways and sometimes it’s through their quirks shining through that enables us to get through situations that can be very trying and test our patience to the limit.
It only takes a few minutes to learn about autism that can make a life time of difference for families like mine.
