First Day At School Helped By A Social Story

First Day At School Helped By A Social Story

Today was a big step for us as Jenna starts Junior school. With Jenna’s learning difficulties we have had lots of problems, anxieties and very nervous about leaving the comfort and security of her infant school. Cumulating into first day at school nerves.

The TA at her infant school devised a social story for Jenna who has constantly read, looked at all summer to help calm her nerves. We did it Jenna went to school no meltdowns, no tears so proud of her. She stood in the playground, lined up and walked into school. We had a slight wobble just before she went in but she kept it all together.

  1. We havent as yet used any social stories with logan, but its something I want to look into as I have heard lots of good things about them

  2. So glad everything went well. Transition can be really stressful time and social stories are just a wonderful creation. We used to have them all the time in primary school. :-)

  3. I am glad the social story was helpful. We have had a photo book of him in his old setting and in his new – he starts next Monday. Hope the rest of the term goes well for you too.

    • Thank you. Yes we had a photo book as well showing her the new teachers, etc.

I hope that it all goes well for you on Monday xx

  4. That’s so amazing. My best friend’s daughter (aged 6) was recently diagnosed with ASD and has just gone into year 2. She is struggling. I must tell her about this. Only know a little about social stories but keen to learn more.

    • Thank you social stories are great for the kids to understand situations. if you need any help please give me a shout xx

  5. This is fantastic, I’m so glad it worked. I have been told about social stories but we haven’t used them yet. I can see us needing them as we get older. It’s so nice that her previous teacher took the time to do this for her.

Thanks for linking up with Small Steps Amazing Achievements :0)

  6. That is so great to hear! We were debating if we should do a social story ourselves to help explain to the class and to our son about his vision problems, but weren’t sure if it works, so thanks for sharing!
So glad she had a good start to the school year!
