I know what you are thinking the blog title is a little bit over the top but you will see why I called it this later on in the post. I have found that autistic children have a different way of learning things to neurotypical children. With this learning they seem to have an acceleration of skills all in one leap then plateau again.
For the last few weeks I have been working quite hard with Zak regarding his recognition skills, we have been working on the normal mummy. daddy etc but to no avail. However, he as achieved to recognise a dog and when he sees it he automatically says
doggie
Without no prompting, this is his first word he has associated with something.
Then we have also been playing a game where we do 1…2…3 and on 3 he stands up holding my hands. Of course due to his autism and mobility problems he has been unable to do this, till last week. We were playing when all of a sudden on 3 he stood up OMG its a miracle. My Zak as tried to stand and he wasn’t standing on the knuckle of his toes, he was standing on the FLATS of his foot.
Then at the weekend Zak was cruising round his play pen again on the flats of his feet, when all of a sudden he let go!!!!!!!. Not just that he let go got his balance and took………
one step, my little boy took his first ever step. He stepped to me and fell into my arms. I was crying with happiness and the best thing was Mr Savvy was at home to witness this miracle. I’m not sure if this will progress to him taking more steps but I am not bothered the fact is he took one step. For me this means the world as I thought I would never see this day. This is the day I will always remember my Zak took his first ever step.

Hi Wendy,
Your post about Zak made me fill up, I was so pleased for you all. All parents feel the joy when children do ‘the first’ of things but not many unless been through it know how much determination and perseverence it takes when a child has autism too.
When my brother was born 45 yrs ago my parents were told to take him home, feed and wash him but that he would never do anything. He was 5 yrs before he could sit unaided, 7 before he took his 1st steps. Before that he went everywhere full length on his back.
Now he can walk for miles, has a funny gait when he walks, legs splayed as wide as they go more or less, and he tends to drag his feet instead of lift them but he can walk as good as the next person.
You know yourself, as a family, you have tough times ahead but I can guarantee Wendy that you and your hubby will still have many more moments of joy.
