It wasn’t until I read this interesting article on What To Expect on childcare that made me think of how much of struggle it is to find the right childcare for a children with autism/complex needs.
I used to be a childminder specialising in the more challenging children but I never ever judged/discriminated against a child. Yet people who should know better think that it is ok to discriminate against an innocent child. It’s amazing how many barriers are put up as soon as you mention the word autism. When I was looking for a nursery for my youngest son who has autism I couldn’t believe the discrimination and ignorance of people. One nursery was all for taking him till I mentioned he had autism and the place was very quickly retracted. What really annoys me is these people made an assumption from a word, instead of meeting the child first and getting to know them.
Then there is the cost of finding the right childcare, most the childminders that can look after a child with autism, charge more than that of a neurotypical child. Why, is it suddenly so more expensive. I have met neurotypical children that are a lot more challenging than a child with complex needs. Life as a parent to a child with autism/complex needs is hard enough with out adding anymore challenges to the mix.
